Honouring exceptional organisations and people.
IFLA Europe seeks to honour outstanding organisations and individuals who share the belief that the unique perspective of landscape architects can help shape a better, more sustainable world. Introduced at the 2014 General Assembly, the IFLA Europe Award celebrates those whose work demonstrates how our profession’s approach to understanding and improving the environment can make a meaningful contribution to sustainable development.

IFLA Europe recognises the critical importance of conserving rural landscapes, which are threatened by shrinking farmland, abandoned traditional cultivation, and intensified agriculture. By promoting dynamic conservation strategies that foster biodiversity and landscape resilience through ongoing innovation and intergenerational exchange, IFLA Europe supports sustainable livelihoods and ecosystem services. The organisation strongly values the FAO’s GIAHS initiative, which highlights the unique blend of biodiversity, tradition, and innovation in rural Europe. Through collaboration with partners like AIAPP and the Agricultural Landscapes Working Group, IFLA Europe advocates for ecologically based landscape planning and regenerative agriculture, empowering smallholders and family farmers. The 2023 IFLA Europe Award was presented to the GIAHS program during the ‘Lost Landscapes’ Conference in Naples, acknowledging its vital role in preserving Europe’s heritage landscapes and addressing rapid transformations with a holistic, inclusive approach to landscape management.
