Robert Holden (United Kingdom) is a landscape architect, educator, and author whose career has spanned professional practice, academic leadership, and international cooperation in landscape architecture. Educated in Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, he began his professional career with the Dutch State Forestry Service (Staatsbosbeheer), contributing to a visual survey of Oostelijk Flevoland, before working in Paris with renowned landscape architect Alain Provost on coastal recreation and conservation planning projects.
Returning to the United Kingdom, Robert worked with leading landscape architecture practices including Derek Lovejoy Partnership and Brian Clouston & Partners, where he became widely recognised for his work on large-scale business park masterplanning and landscape-led development. During the 1980s he was involved in landmark projects such as Aztec West near Bristol, Capability Green in Luton, and Colchester Business Park, helping to establish new standards for the integration of landscape within commercial development. He also served as a director at Clouston and contributed to major international projects, including planning and design work for Euro Disneyland in France.
Since the 1990s, Robert has continued his practice through a number of specialist consultancies, working on projects across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, including commissions in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Libya, the United Arab Emirates, and Russia. His professional interests have focused particularly on sustainable development, urban regeneration, post-industrial landscapes, and the public realm.
Alongside his practice, Robert has made a major contribution to landscape architecture education. From 1992 to 2013 he taught at the University of Greenwich, where he served as Senior Lecturer, Course Director, and ultimately Head of Landscape Architecture. During this period he helped shape one of the United Kingdom’s leading landscape architecture programmes and supervised numerous international academic collaborations and research initiatives.
A longstanding supporter of the profession, Robert has been actively involved with both the Landscape Institute and IFLA Europe. He served on the Council of the Landscape Institute and has contributed as a mentor, examiner, and professional practice supervisor. At the European level, he served as Vice President for Education of the European Foundation for Landscape Architecture (EFLA) from 2001 to 2004 and later as Secretary General from 2004 to 2008, playing a significant role in strengthening European cooperation in landscape architecture and supporting the evolution of EFLA into what is now IFLA Europe.
An accomplished writer and researcher, Robert has published extensively on landscape architecture, urban design, sustainability, and professional practice. His publications include Landscape Architecture: An Introduction, Urban Design, and, together with Jamie Liversedge, Landscape Architecture as a Career, which has inspired many young professionals to enter the discipline.
